General Information
The department of Plastic Surgery in SMS Hospital, Jaipur was founded in 1970 under the guidance of Dr. Chandalia whose vision helped to grow the department to the heights that it is today. The department further blossomed under Dr. Malti Gupta, who was one of the first female plastic surgeons of the country. Following her, there were many great leaders heading the department including Dr.G.S. Kalra, a man of distinct vision, an ideal of knowledge, experience and inspiration to all of us. Following that the department was fortunate to have the dynamic personality and work ethic of Dr. Pradeep Goil taking the department to its current heights. Currently the department is being run by Dr R.K. Jain, a meticulous surgeon and a great mentor leading the department during these trying times of COVID -19.
With over 150 beds in the hospital, the department is one of the busiest in the country. The department trains 8 MCh residents every year. There are three units running including 4 Senior professor, 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor and 1 Assistant Professor. The department also boasts of having three Senior Residents as well as rotatory internships of Maxillofacial Surgeons.

The OT Complex is equipped with modern technologies like microscopes and lasers. The department excels in numerous sub specialties of Plastic Surgery including Microsurgery, Brachial Plexus Injuries, Craniofacial Anomalies, Clefts, Post Burn deformities, Cancer Reconstruction, Maxillofacial Injuries, Hand Surgery, genitourinary Surgeries, Smile Reconstruction in Facial Palsy and Aesthetic Surgeries. Under their able leadership, the residents have the opportunity to train in an atmosphere that allows them to maximize their potential. At the end of the three years of residency, they are proficient in all aspects of plastic surgery and are absorbed in faculty positions in the best of academic and private institutes. On an average 20-25 surgeries are performed each day, which makes it one of the busiest departments of the nation.
The department has an active academic schedule with daily morning classes consisting of Seminars, Journal Clubs and Case Presentations. We also have guest lectures from international and local faculties. During the COVID times, the department has been holding online webinars with participants from around the country. It is compulsory for every resident to have two research activities to be published in journals of international repute during their tenure. The faculty is repeatedly invited as speakers in leading national and international conferences.
Establishment of northern India’s first skin bank is in pipe line by the support & efforts of our dynamic and visionary principle Dr. Sudhir Bhandhari. The department led by Dr. R.K. Jain is now pressing forward to be the first department in Northern India to establish a hand and face transplant program. We are sure that the coming years will see the department move from strength to strength and touch new heights in the sphere of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Annually in main operation theaters about 2500 major and 1000 minor surgical procedures are performed. While in emergency OT we performed 1034 OT in year of 2019 out of which 577 were major and 547 were minor OT.
And in trauma on year of 2019, total admissions were 2239. On an average we admit 75 maxillofacial & 100 Extremity injuries cases per month. In the same year we operated total 1717 cases of them, of which 1432 Major & 285 were minor cases.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
Our department is one of the initial hospital in India to start MCh training programme in Plastic Surgery in the year 1972. The Unit is recognized for training in our mch student is taken for this programme. Every year the selection is done on merit by an MCQ exam taken by MCI. The department conducts its on academic meeting five times a week to discuss important and interesting cases. Regular teaching programmes include clinical demonstrations, journal club, seminars and guest lectures. The curriculum of department aims to make the trainees independent surgeon with basic training and knowledge of plastic surgery.
Plastic Surgery Emergency Operations
Emergency OT of SMS hospital which houses 3 state-of-the-art operation theaters, a preoperative assessment unit with 4 beds with 2 recovery rooms. Emergency OT equipped with modern equipment to offer safe & effective surgery to patients who needs emergency intervention which includes patients from general surgery, ENT & plastic surgery. One table is reserved for plastic surgery department for carrying out emergency surgeries in burn & trauma patients. LED surgical ceiling lights ensure that the surgeons operate in an environment that would significantly improve the outcome of the operations. The complex also provides enough space for the Patients relatives to wait while their loved ones are being operated. Work load in Emergency OT is increasing with every passing year as SMS hospital is major tertiary centre in Northern India, as shown below in Graph:-

Department of plastic & reconstructive surgery have put together a team of highly qualified & dedicated plastic surgeons to deliver the best care at free of cost to general public . We at SMS hospital are committed to public service with high standards. Emergency OT also serves as a breeding ground for young plastic surgeons as well.
Main Plastic OT complex
Annually about 2500 major and 1000 minor surgical procedures are performed. The range of surgical services provided by the OT complex include reconstructive microsurgery, Aesthetic surgery, maxillofacial and cleft surgeries, in addition to taking care of patients with burn wounds. All type of elective plastic surgery procedures are carried out in this state of the art operation theatre complex comprising of 3 modular OT and a pain clinic. All OT’s are equipped with an electronically adjustable table with ultra-modern set of lights and well trained staff. OT complex also consists of 2 highly advanced top of the line microscopes for super microsurgery.
