Department of General Medicine
The department provides round the clock services in the emergency department. There is a separate emergency ward for seriously ill patients along with an adequately trained staffed with well equipped Emergency ICU. The emergency is housed by 2 residents round the clock in an 8 hours shift. They in turn are monitored by faculty member on floor duty.

Early in the December 2019, a new disease encounter called COVID-19 knocked on our doorstep. In the pandemic of Covid-19 large population was affected throughout the world with significant mortality. In Rajasthan, SMS Medical College & Hospital is the pioneer and remained at the forefront of the treatment of the Covid-19 patients. The SMS Hospital, beginning March 2020, when the first case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in the city, was converted in the Covid-19 hospital. The Department of Medicine, led the way to manage the Covid-19 cases in the hospital. Various teams comprising of senior professors, professors, associate professors, assistant professors, senior residents and residents were formed and deployed at various designated facilities i.e ILI OPD, Covid-19 care emergency, observation wards, ARI and SARI wards & ICUs, Covid-19 wards & ICUs running round the clock for more than last three months. The whole treatment was supervised by a Covid-19 treatment protocol team of senior most faculty members from the department. SMS Hospital strategy suspected covid-19 patients those have mild respiratory illness were treated in Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI) ward and Severe symptomatic patients were treated in Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) ward. In Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), serious covid-19 patients were treated by the panel of expert faculty members in a 13 bedded ICU.
From July onwards, SMS Hospital was made Covid-19 free due to the herculean efforts of the department of medicine and patients were shifted to Rajasthan University of Health Sciences Hospital, Pratap Nagar, Jaipur, where the RUHS faculty strengthening is done by deputing a team of 16 faculty members under the headship of one senior professor.
