Department of Neurosurgery
The neurosurgery speciality has a modest start-up in the year 1994, as a merge unit under Department of Surgery.
With only one faculty and few beds under department of Surgery. However, with the persistent efforts of Dr Tarun Kumar Gupta the unit started growing in term of patient outdoor, admission and number of neurosurgical procedures.
In June 1995, with the joining of one more faculty member Dr H. Bagaria as an Associate Professor the neurosurgery unit was converted into a separate department and regular elective operation theatre twice a week with nearly 100 procedures in a year, that time.
With untiring effort of the faculty and support from The Government, the department kept on growing further in term of latest gazettes and equipment.
Various corporate agencies also contributed financially to the tune of nearly or more than one crore INR in so many years for the department as per the guidelines.
With a faculty strength of three more members (Dr B. S. Dutta, Dr Uday Bhaumik, Dr Gaurav Jaiswal) M.Ch training program could be initiated in 2013, with two M.Ch. residents per year.
In the last 26 years, Department has made a long journey in term of spectrum of neurosurgical procedures which include vascular neurosurgery, skull base surgery, complex spine procedures, CVJ Anomaly, Awake Craniotomy, cranial and spine endoscopy, Neuro-oncology, cranial and spine trauma, paediatric neurosurgery, ICP monitoring and surgeries in sitting position.
The department is equipped with modern technology and equipments from time to time i.e. operating microscope, CUSA and endoscope.
With a moderate beginning in 1995, when nearly 100 procedure were performed in a year, today we are able to do nearly 1000 procedures in a year. Currently more than 100 endoscopic and 100 vascular surgery each (aneurysmal clipping) has been performed.
The department is also involved in the field of research and academic activities.
