The Department of Pathology was established in 1965 under the dynamic leadership of Dr BC Sahgal, a renowned Pathologist and an excellent teacher. Over the years the department has been providing investigative services, teaching and training of undergraduate, postgraduate students and Paramedical students. The department has various subspecialties like Histopathology, Autopsy, Cytopathology, Hematology and Clinical Pathology. The department is catering to the demands of all the medical and surgical specialities of the hospital. It also receives specimens from Govt Mahila Chikitsalaya, Satellite hospital and nearby private hospitals.
Pathology Department is stratified under:-
Histopathology: The histopathology lab is Semiautomated and in addition to routine techniques, Special staining, frozen sections and immunohistochemistry are also done for diagnostic work. In addition, range of various immunohistochemical stains have been added which now help in further making a more specfic diagnosis. Also has a Cryostate for advancement of department.
Autopsy Pathology: Histopathologic examination of the viscera of all the medico-legal autopsies of the Ajmer District and Bhilwara district are done in the department.
Cytopathology: The FNA Work is run Monday to Saturday (Working Days) in the Medical college premises. US guided and CT guided fine needle aspirations are performed in collaboration with the radiologists in JLN Hospital. The samples of exfoliative cytology including Pap smears are received daily in the department.
Hematology: This section includes both Hematology tests. Basic Hematology tests are done in Central Labs and Special hematology tests like bone marrow examination and HPLC etc. are done in Medical college Hematology Section.
Central Lab: There is a 24 hour running central laboratory for OPD, indoor and emergency patients in the JLN hospital and In Govt Mahila Chikitsalaya, Central laboratory is running only OPD Hours.
Teaching & Training
Post graduate course:
MD in the department of Pathology was started in the year 1976 Initially 01 students were admitted annually and from the year 2022 currently the number has been increased to 16 students per year. The department runs an extensive training program for the residents that include tutorials, journal reviews, seminars, gross and slide discussions, CPC and Rapid Fire. Till date 101(Up to 2021) students have been awarded MD Pathology degree.
PG research Lab: The department is having a post graduate research lab. For better services equipped with IHC, fluorescent microscope with TV and Camera, Pentahead, Automated Tissue Processor, HPLC and a Cryostat.
Under graduate courses:
MBBS: Currently Teaching is provided to 250 students during 3rd to 4th semester. In addition to the didactic lectures many interactive sessions like seminars and Poster competition are held regularly so as to clear all the theoretical as well as practical aspects of the subject. Latest microscopes and audio-visual equipment are used for teachings.

5. BRT (I Year): 10 Students( Started since 2014)
Practical and theory classes of paramedical students are taken by the Experienced Doctors with assistance by Technician. The students of MLT vocational training are posted in the department as a part of their internship training.
