General Information
The Academic Section of Dr S N Medical College and Attached Hospitals, Jodhpur under the esteemed and dynamic visionary and head of the Institute, The Principal and Controller oversees the dissemination of Medical Education as per the norms set by Medical Council of India (MCI), India and Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS). The section ensures the smooth administration of undergraduate, postgraduate, certificates course – work in clinical specialties and super- specialty courses in Medical Sciences as per the stipulations of MCI and RUHS. The section also oversees the execution and conduct of the ancillary undergraduate Para-medical program as per the stipulations of RUHS. All issues related to the academia of the above cited course- work including admission process, syllabi, stringent scholastic schedule, examinations, scholarships and measures to evolve the education process akin to Medical and its ancillary Para-Medical program are dealt with in commiserate with the demands and dictates of the prevailing times.
The elaborate and evolved schema of Medical Research, that forms an essential part of Medical Education, is also addressed by the Academic Section of the Institute. The research work at the undergraduate, postgraduate and super-specialty level is routed through an evolved well-developed structured screening protocol to evaluate the veracity, relevance, ethics and the benefits that a research study would give to the society. The research proposals are processed through Institutional Research Review Board (IRRB), Clinical Trial Screening Committee (CTSC) and a well- organized Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) that ensure and promote research activity at all levels of undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty domains so as to maintain and promote patient- care. It is also ensured that inter-disciplinary research with involvement of specialists from all fields of application medical sciences and basic sciences get the right impetus and support.

PERIOD OF TRAINING:-
The period of training for the award of various postgraduate degrees or diplomas shall be as follows:
(1) Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) / Master of Surgery (M.S.)
The period of training for obtaining these degrees shall be three completed years including the period of examination. Provided that in the case of students having a recognized two year postgraduate diploma course in the same subject, the period of training, including the period of examination, shall be two year.
Course content and structure are as directed by Medical Council of India. Resident doctors receive hands on training in emergencies pertaining to that specialty, outpatient and inpatient management (including diagnosis and treatment), ward procedures, teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates and community services. Surgical residents are trained in the principles of surgery and actually operate under supervision. During the 3 year period, the student also does research and writes a thesis. Application for registration of the thesis topic can be made 12 months after admission to the course. A student is eligible to appear at the MD or MS examination provided he/she has obtained the MBBS degree, has completed 12 months Internship and subsequently put in 3 years continuous work as junior resident in the department concerned. The MD / MS degree shall be conferred on the candidate after acceptance of his/her thesis and after passing the prescribed MD / MS examination. The examination consists of written, clinical (or practical) and oral parts.
(2) Diplomas
The period of training for obtaining a postgraduate Diploma shall be two completed years including the examination period.
Migration/transfer of students undergoing any postgraduate course – degree /diploma shall not be permitted by any university or any authority.
Doctor of Medicine (D.M.) / Master Chirurgiae (M.Ch.) superspeciality courses:-
These courses are available in the following subjects -
DM: Cardiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Endocrinology
M.ch.:- Cardiology, Vassular Surgery (CTVS), Neurosurgery, Urology Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Ped. Surgery
Candidates are eligible for entry to these courses if they have obtained:
MS in Surgery for Plastic Surgery, Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery, and Pediatric Surgery MS in Surgery/Orthopedics/ENT for Neurosurgery. MD in Medicine/Pediatrics for Cardiology or Neurology.
Recognition of these courses by Medical Council of India should be ascertained at the time of admission. Admissions are on the basis of All India competitive examinations conducted by the Vice Chancellors in consultation with Head of the concerned department. The entrance examination consists of theory paper, practical or clinical examination and interview. These courses are of 3 years duration. The student is given advanced hands on training in all aspects of the concerned super specialty. In addition he/she is required to work on and submit a thesis or dissertation.
Selection Procedure
Students for Postgraduate medical courses shall be selected strictly on the basis of their academic merit.
Candidates are eligible for entrance to these courses after completing Internship. On the basis of merit as determined by the competitive test conducted by the State Government or by the competent authority appointed by the State Government or by the university/group of universities in the same state or on the basis of merit as determined by a centralized competitive test held at the national level; or provided that wherever entrance test for Postgraduate admission is held by the State Government or a university or any other authorized examining body, the minimum percentage of marks for eligibility for admission to postgraduate medical courses shall be fifty percent for general category candidates and 40 percent for the candidate belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward classes.

Examination Pattern
The examinations shall be organized on the basis of grading or marking system to evaluate and certify candidate’s level of knowledge, skill and competence at the end of the training and obtaining a minimum of 50% marks in theory as well as practical separately shall be mandatory for passing the whole examination. The examination for M.S., M.D., D.M., M.Ch., shall be held at the end of 3 academic years (six academic terms) and for diploma at the end of 2 academic years (four academic terms). The academic terms shall mean six months training period.
