Department of Plastic Surgery
The Department of Plastic Surgery at S.M.S. Hospital, Jaipur was established in the year 1972 under the able and esteemed guidance of Professor B. S. Chandalia – a dynamic and visionary plastic surgeon, along with an Assistant Professor with one Postgraduate Resident. The department flourished and evolved. Down the line the faculty blossomed and increased in number with the Super-specialty Program in Plastic Surgery, M.Ch., being initiated in the year 1985 with an annual intake of two residents.
With the pressing demands of time the faculty and residents of the department bloomed. Presently the department has four Senior Professors-1 Professor, 3 Assistant Professors and 3 Senior Residents with an annual intake of six M.Ch. residents, with a total of eighteen M.Ch. students pursuing their training program at any point of time. At present, the department is headed by Dr. G.S. Kalra, a very dynamic and renowned Plastic Surgeon.
The Department has a-total allotted bed strength of Seventy Five in the Reconstructive Surgery Ward and Forty three in the Burn Ward. The Department also has an attached specialty ICU.
The total annual indoor admission is of the order of 5200. The Department has a separate library and a seminar room with all modern audio video facility for teaching. There is a separate laboratory for micro surgery training in the ward. The Department has the facilities for Laser treatment as well. There is a modern separate Modular Operation Theatre Complex with a total eighteen operating tables allotted to the theatre every week.
Around 5800 patients are operated every year in emergency and routine theatre by the department.
In emergency all the trauma cases involving loss of skin and soft tissue are operated.
Re-implantation of severed fingers/ wrist/ forearm are done on a routine basis with a success rate of around 60-70% depending various factors namely the timing of bringing the patient to the hospital, type of injury etc.
All faciomaxillary injuries, burn cases and post-burn deformities are being handled on a regular basis. Reconstructive surgery of all the congenital abnormalities like cleft + craniofacial anomalies, hand & ear anomalies, genitourinary anomalies are being routinely performed. In adults brachial plexus injuries, smile reconstruction for facial palsy, head and neck cancer reconstruction, new breast reconstruction after mastectomy are being routinely performed.
Microsurgical operations for free tissue transfer are being regularly done as a standard procedure. In cosmetic surgery body contouring, breast modification, scar revision and related plastic reconstruction are being routinely done.
The faculty is actively involved with research work antecedent to good patient care and medical education looking for answers to questions that still elude the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon.
The major thrust areas of Dr. G.S. Kalra are congenital craniostenosis, facial clefts, brachial plexus injuries, facial smile operation, cancer reconstruction and mammoplasty and are ably supported by the departmental infrastructure and man-power.
The department has received international acclaim across the globe. The faculty has published and presented their scientific work both at the national and international platform. It is indeed an honor and a privilege for the department that its faculty has been invited as key-note speakers in both national and international conferences and seminars. National and international conferences bringing in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons from across the globe to the arena of S.M.S. Hospital, Jaipur are being organized on a routine basis for exhaustive intellectual deliberations.
The Department recently performed the state’s first cadaveric skin transplant and a state-of-the-art skin bank is in the pipeline.
