SMS Hospital, Jaipur, earlier known as Lady Willingdon Hospital had a separate General Surgery Department from the very onset. Children in those days were treated as miniature adults but in early sixties it was realized that feeble cries of these children were often lost amidst the loud agonizing sighs of adult surgical patients. It was then desired to ponder facilities to a trained surgeon who is dedicated to children care and compassionate enough towards agony of small patients. With the untiring efforts of Dr. L. R. Sarin, the then superintendent of SMS Hospital, a separate unit of Paediatric Surgery was created with the appointment of Dr. K. C. Sogani as reader who had been trained in Paediatric Surgery in U.S.A. and U.K., the Paediatric Surgery unit stared functioning from 1st July 1965. Thus, the department of Paediatric Surgery has been serving the state for more than 50 years.
A small unit of ten beds grew with pace due to untiring efforts of Dr. K. C. Sogani. In view of meritorious services rendered by him, he was subsequently elevated to the high office of Professor in 1970. At that time Dept. was staffed with one Professor, one lecture (Dr.B.P.Kalani), one house surgeon and four nursing staff, who were looking after 20 bedded ward and a Neonatal Surgical ICU.The department has the credit of first successful surgical repair of Tracheo-Oesophageal Fistula anomaly in the Country in 1971. Dr. Sogani was pioneer in dealing with cases of EA.with TEF and had highest survival in the country.
Later on demand for a separate paediatric Hospital was felt and due to the perseverance of Dr. Sogani a separate children hospital came into existence in the international year for children in 1979. This new hospital is popularly known aJayKay Lon Hospital (SPMCHI). Two units of Paediatric Medicine and one unit of Paediatric Surgery (40 beds) were shifted to this hospital.
With the untiring and dedicated efforts of Dr. Sogani, Post Doctoral Course (M.Ch) was started and was the first super specialty department in SMS Medical College, Jaipur to start M.Ch course in 1978. So far 83 M.Ch. students from all over India have passed from the Department, making the department one of the largest contributor to Paediatric Surgery faculty and Paediatric Surgery consultants in India.
The department had the privilege of organizing Annual Conference of Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons (IAPSCON) in the year 1974, 1983 & 2007. Department also conducted International Workshop on Paediatric Urology in 1998 and Operative Workshop on Paediatric Laparoscopy in 2008. The department also had the privilege of supporting and jointly hosting 10th Annual National Conference of PESI-IAPSCON in 2015 (Paediatric Endo Surgeons Group of India). Advance Urology & Laparoscopic Procedures are being performed since 2008.
The department had the honor of having president of Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons (IAPS) in the years 1983 & 1984 (Dr. Sogani) and 1995 (Dr. A. K. Sharma). Dr. B.P. Kalani, the first Assistant Professor of the department, described a new surgical technique of colorapphy in cases of pouch colon, which has been widely quoted in the world literature.
Former Professor & Head Dr. A. K. Sharma worked and visited various Universities in U.S.A. as Visiting Prof. He initiated technique of oblique anastomosis in EA with TEF. During this period a trauma ward, Emergency OT and Departmental Library was added to the department. He has also been awarded Durairajan IAPS Gold Medal.

Professor V.N. Jhameria was awarded WHO Fellowship in Paediatric Urology at Philadelphia USA in 2000.
Former Professor& Head Dr. Ram Babu Goyal & Professor Praveen Mathur were awarded Merit Certificate by the Government of Rajasthan in 1996 & 2000 respectively.

During the tenure of Former Professor & Head Dr. Narpat Singh Shekhawat and Superintendent of hospital new wards of Paediatric Surgery were added to the Dept. He was awarded Dr. B. C. Roy award in 2006, for his contribution in the field of Socio-medical Science.

Professor Praveen Mathur was awarded Commonwealth Fellowship in Paediatric Laparoscopy at Great Ormond Hospital, London, U.K. (1999-2000). He is working on a research project of congenital pouch colon which has been approved for research grant by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of Rajasthan in 2009 and recently by the ICMR. Director General ICMR sanctioned the budget allotment of Rs. 41,57,936/- for research project entitled, “Study of Pouch Colon affected probands in Rajasthan”.He has contributed a chapter on this anomaly in text book of Newborn Surgery 3rd Edition 2011. He was also awarded Dr. Farooq Abdullah Best Research Paper Award for Senior Category 2008 – 09.
This book was awarded British Medical Association – Medical Book Award 2012.
Professor Dr. Arvind Kumar Shukla is presently Executive member of Urology section of IAPS. He has performed one of the largest series of hypospadias with 150 patients annually. His 3 research /original articles have been published recently in International journals. A simple penile dressing following hypospadias repair has been named after him (Shukla dressing).
Dr. Arvind Shukla is one of those ,who have done maximum number of Hypospadias Surgery by a single surgeon.
Professor & Head Dr. Arun Kumar Gupta has made sincere contribution in upgradation of the department. The number of seats in M.Ch. Paediatric Surgery course in the department has been increased from 2 to 10 under his tenure. Procurement of ABG machines, new O.T. equipment and upgradation of Emergency O.T., computerization of the departmental records and upgradation of Library has been done. New faculty (Assistant Professors) has been recruited in the department.New 10 bedded Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and 10 bedded Post operative Surgical Intensive Care Unithas started because of untiring and persistent efforts of Dr. Arun Kumar Gupta in 2016. CPC of the Department of Paediatric Surgery on the topic “Paediatric patient with WAGR syndrome”: was held on 10th February 2017.
Dr Rahul Gupta (Assistant Professor) was awarded Dr. Farooq Abdullah Best Research Paper Award for Junior Category in the year 2015-16 for the research article: (Gupta R, Sharma SB, Dagla R. Nonfluroscopic well-tempered pressure augmented distal colostogram in high-type anorectal malformation: Our experience. Archives of International Surgery 2015;5(2):88-95).

Dr Rahul Gupta and Professor Dr Shyam Bihari Sharma have written a book (monograph) on Choledochal cyst which has been published in February 2015. This is the 1st monograph from the department. Professor Shyam Bihari Sharma served as Executive Member of IAPS in the year 1995-96.
At present total bed strength is 200; including 40 Neonatal Surgical ICU beds (2 Neonatal Surgical ICU’s). Also, new Post-operative Surgical ICU with bed strength of 10 is operational from this year.
Department has four Service Units. At present it comprises of 4 Senior Professor, 1 Professor (Reappointment), 3 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors, 1 Principal Specialist (Post M.Ch. Paediatric Surgery), 1 Senior Resident (Post M.Ch. Paediatric Surgery), 11 M.Ch. Residents, 3 Senior Medical Officers.
Total Number of 350 Publications, both national and international journals of repute has been published from department.
Average annual number of OPD and IPD patients are 56538 and 8248 respectively; with average daily OPD of 153/day and daily IPD of 25/ day. Total number of major operations performed was 4253 in 2017; with average daily major operations are 12-15 and minor operations performed were1296 in 2017.
Surgical procedures performed are minimal access, which include laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery, cystoscopy, neurosurgical ventriculoscopy. Approximately 500 Neurosurgical procedures are carried out in one year; 250 Head & neck are performed yearly. 170 Thoracic lung procedures; Urological procedures include urethroplasty for Hypospadias, and all paediatric solid tumors of trunk are managed by department
Neonatal Surgery is one of the important focuses of the department. All congenital malformations are operated and managed by department, exceptions being the cardiac malformation. Also both preoperative and postoperative care is provided exclusively by the department, with fairly good results. Newborn surgeries performed are Esophageal Atresia (Approximately 300 repairs annually), 60 cases of Congenial Diaphragmatic hernia / Eventration, Lobectomy in neonatal age group. Neonatal Neurosurgical procedures include repair of meningomyelocele, encephalocele and VP shunts (hydrocephalus).
Neonatal abdominal wall and umbilical defects like Exomphalos and Gastroschisis (Approximately 60) are repaired. Neonatal inguinal hernias, Umbilical Vein catheterisation, peritoneal dialysis catheterisation is managed by department.
All Neonatal gastrointestinal atresias, obstruction and perforation and also Billiary Atresia Choledochal Cyst are managed exclusively by the department. Surgeries for Sacrococcygeal teratoma and other Newborn tumors are also operated and managed by department.
The process of developing subspecialties in Paediatric Surgery has already begun. All these efforts will go a long way in great advancements at this centre making it the apex referral centre not only for the state but also for adjoining states of Haryana, MP, & Eastern parts of UP. The department has emerged as one of the best centre for teaching and training for M.Ch. candidates.
