General Information
Mahila Chikitsalaya is a tertiary care hospital & one of the busiest hospital of Jaipur. It is an attached teaching hospital (Obstetrics &Gynaecology Department) of SMS Medical College, Jaipur to provide Obstetrics care and Gynaecological services to the patients. It is located in the heart of old city area of Jaipur near to Sanganeri Gate.
The Cottage Hospital was erected by Major General Sir Sawai Madho Singh Bahadur in memory of his friend Lt. Col. Sir Curzon Wyllie in A.D 1911. The Zanana Ward has been built at a cost of Rs 43,470 by Sir Sawai Madho Singh Bahadur in memory of Lady Hardinge of Penshurst Vicereine of India and was opened by Lord Reading Viceroy and Governor General of India on 19th March, 1922. The Mayo Hospital was other name of this hospital in public domain. But in 1937 this hospital was converted into court and transport office. On 1st March 1987 the Chief Minister Late Haridev Joshi again converted this building into hospital for women care. At that time 176 beds were sanctioned with two units. In 1989 four medical shops were started by Kardhani. The Cubical ward of this hospital was constructed by donation in 1997.Presently there are 404 sanctioned beds out of which there are 8 ICU beds. There is another block consisting of 100 beds in newly built Mother & Neonatal wing, thus making total strength of 504 beds.
Since 2004, this hospital had Modern Labour Rooms, Operation Theatre & Intensive care units. New Outdoor block, Blood Bank, Laboratory, X-Ray, Ultrasound units were constructed by RUIDP (Rajasthan Urban Infrastructure Development Project) & started on 29th July 2005.
Presently there are four Obstetrics & Gynaecology Units and one Paediatric unit which were started in 1987. Paediatric unit consists of 42 neonatal beds which provide services round the clock. Free services are provided for mother & neonate under JSSY, MNDY & MNJY schemes. BSBY (Bhamashah Beema Yojna) was started on 13th December 2015 to provide medical insurance to the patients.
The UNICEF team which visited the hospital on 5 April 2013 highly appreciated the working & cleanliness of this hospital despite immense workload.
The institution provides undergraduate training for MBBS students & interns and postgraduate teaching to the PG residents. In 2015, one year certificate course were started for MBBS doctors working in rural areas to improve patient care. The hospital premises have residential facility for doctors, paramedical staff & PG students.
Recent Developments:-
On 26 March 2015, Rajasthan’s first state-run Human Milk Bank (Jeevan Dhara) was inaugurated by Health Minister Shri Rajendra Singh Rathore at Mahila Chikitsalaya in collaboration with NIPI(Norwegian Govt.) & J.K. Lon Hospital, Jaipur.It aims to collect excess breast milk from willing lactating mothers after screening which is provided to newborns and infants deprived of it. The Milk Bank, is following International guidelines during the procedures. This will help in reducing Infant Mortality Rate of Rajasthan.
A new Mother & Neonatal wing built by Central Govt. of India (NRHM) comprising of 100 beds and all modern facilities including two Modern Labour Rooms, one neonatal unit, four O.Ts ,one recovery room, one waiting hall, three wards and nineteen cottage and cubical rooms, & one blood bank and two lifts will be inaugurated shortly.
Patient Care (Major Achievements)
Mahila Chikitsalaya is one of the major departments of S.M.S Medical College, Jaipur. It has made remarkable strides in the past & continues to work hard for excellence in patient care, clinical & experimental research & post graduate teaching & training of the residents.
The institution has grown over the years & is currently having 404 sanctioned beds. There is a qualified team of 43 doctors, 30 residents & 275 nurses which provide free health care services round the clock.
Various incentive related government flagship schemes were launched in Rajasthan since 2006 namely
(1) JSY (Janani Suraksha Yojana) in April 2006
(2) JSSY (Janani Shishu Suraksha Yojana) in September 2011.
(3) MNDY (Mukhyamantri Nishulk Dava Yojana) on 2nd October 2011
(4) MNJY (Mukhymantri Nishulk Jaanch Yojana) in April 2013 &
(5) Shubhlaxmi Mukhymantri Yojana in April 2013.
Since 2007, the institutional deliveries have increased immensely thus providing increased survival of mother & child due to safe deliveries. In 2014, the statistics shows:-

In 2014, the beneficiaries of pathology, microbiology, biochemistry investigations , radiology & others were 145885, 69296, 105066, 62799 & 691 respectively.
In year 2014-15 free transport was provided to 2909 ANC patients till their residence. (Rural & referred) In Year 2014-15, 6074 urban ANC patients received fare for coming to the hospital for delivery & going back to their residence.
Similarly the beneficiaries of FW services and Immunization clinic have greatly increased. Due to better communication, consultation & comprehensive treatment an average of 294 ANC patients and 197 Gynae patients are benefitted daily in the OPD. There are total no. of 90 to 108 IPD admissions /day. There are approximately 20 to 25 LSCS /day and 25 to 33 vaginal deliveries/day.
Milestones of recent developments & achievements in patient care are upgradation of nursery, Milk Bank inauguration in March 2015 & new addition of AC wing containing 60 beds in Sept 2015 for maternal care.
4D ultrasound & mammography have also been started shortly. Similarly internet connection & computers have been made available in the department. A total no. of 47 CCTV cameras have been installed throughout the hospital with central monitoring for security purposes.
Another feather in the cap is newly built modern 100 bedded mother & neonatal wing (17 crores) which will be inaugurated shortly and will cater to the needs of Rajasthan & nearby areas.
